Because light takes time to travel, what you see in the telescope is the past. Place your eye to the lens and look. The farther out you go, the closer you are to the beginning. Before the wheeling galaxies, there was the deep dark. There, at the edges of the newborn universe, one by one, long-dead stars are just now blooming into life.
